Eckhart Tolle was born in Germany, where he spent the first thirteen years of his life. After graduating from the University of London, he was a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. When he was twenty-nine, a profound spiritual transformation virtually dissolved his old identity and radically changed the course of his life. The next few years were devoted to understanding, integrating and deepening that transformation, which marked the beginning of an intense inward journey.

Milton’s Secret by Eckhart Tolle and Robert S. Friedman Illustrated by Frank RiccioEckhart Tolle has really hit a groove here with his first book for children. Milton’s Secret is destined to become a childhood classic. Along with co-author Robert S. Friedman, Tolle has covered a complex topic with clarity and a light touch. Milton’s Secret has all the earmarks of warmth and humor that have characterized Tolle’s first two books: The Power of Now and A New Earth – Awakening to your Life’s Purpose.

One can see the trend here in each book, as the years go by and Tolle refines and simplifies his concept of “being in the Now” more and more. Viewed that way, a children’s book was the natural next step. Or maybe it’s been that simple all along, and it just took looking at the world through a child’s eyes to bring it home for us. When I think of the adults that I have seen struggle with some of these ideas, I want to hand them Milton’s Secret – I get the feeling that as many adults as children are going to have that “Ah ha” moment while reading this book.

Illustrations are all important in any child’s book, and Frank Riccio deserves a special nod for the lovely art here. As we all know, it’s the pictures that grab the eye first, and then the words have a chance to sink in. Ricchio’s illustrations have that magical, dreamlike quality that will captivate children and hold their attention. Kids will find it easy to enter into Milton’s world.

This could be a great stocking stuffer for any child on your holiday list this year. If you’re the kind of parent that has been venturing on your own spiritual journey, then consider what a leg up you’d have had if someone had explained these concepts to you when you were little. But even if you don’t have a child, do yourself the favor and read Milton’s Secret – the best secret about this book is that it’s going to be a hit with adults, too!
