I experience moments of surrender, and I feel love showering down on me from all directions. I feel at home, and I can see how struggling with “what is” is meaningless. I have no idea how I get to the experience, but just as quickly as it happens, it’s gone again. Why can’t I stay in a state of surrender all the time?

Eliza Mada DalianThis happens to everyone. It is impossible to make any of our experiences permanent. To surrender to what is means to accept everything, including the moments of non-surrendering. There is nothing wrong with changing experiences. Our experiences are like the weather. When it is cloudy and cold, we contract and withdraw. When it is warm and sunny, we feel open, energized, and uplifted.

We are not separate from anything in existence. Whatever is happening in the universe is also happening in us. Our ego cannot comprehend or accept this. It always wants to make things permanent so it can stay in control. It is impossible to make any experience stand still. If you could make one experience permanent, there would be no possibility of having other experiences. You would be trapped in a static photograph with no growth, creativity, transformation, or evolution. Life is impossible without continually changing experiences. To be fully alive means to be open to change with each moment regardless of what it brings. To be able to live life this way you must continually let go of every experience. Enjoy the experience while it is happening but once it passes, let it go.

If you can understand that the only thing that is permanent in life is change and accept that everything will pass, you will be able to surrender to ever-changing moments and transcend your mind. Watch each experience as it is happening and let it go. Accept that one moment you will feel happy and the next you will feel sad or angry. Observe your mind’s tendency to push away what it doesn’t like or thinks as wrong. With observation and meditation, you will slowly start to notice the in-between gaps where there is no movement, where everything is still and calm regardless of the changing experiences.

As your awareness of the silent and still gaps between experiences strengthens, you stop identifying with the changing ups and downs, and your consciousness starts to take root in the gaps. When you experience a peak, you will know, even before the next moment arrives, that a valley will be coming. Then you can simply be there, welcoming and watching the mystery of both the peaks and the valleys.
