LOVE, LIGHT, & LUNACY – March 23, 2016 Lunar Eclipse

LOVE, LIGHT, AND LUNACY – March 23, 2016 Lunar Eclipse – 3° Libra

Every month the Full Moon sheds light on that which is hidden in the unconscious providing the opportunity for new awareness, deeper self-knowledge and growth. Anecdotal observations from ER doctors attest to spikes of weird injuries and crimes of passion during and around Full Moons. In fact, the etymology of the word lunacy translates from the Old English monoseoc “lunatic” literally meaning “moon-sick” and originally referred to “insanity of an intermittent kind attributed to changes of the Moon”.1

Today’s Full Moon is a lunar eclipse, which is an extra powerful Full Moon that illuminates where we need to let go of a long-standing pattern. Its energy is amplified by the fact that it comes right after the Spring Equinox (March 21). This Full Moon is in the sign of Libra representing balance and relationships and can be summed up in the phrase “I relate”. The Spring Equinox, the archetypal time of the sign Aries, represents the individual and the drive to initiate something new and can be summed up in the phrase “I am”. The polarity represented by the signs Aries and Libra — the polarity of self and other – means that the spotlight is on relationships both with others and within ourselves.

The Spring Equinox represents a time of renewal, a powerful moment when opposites come into balance and harmony reorienting our consciousness and making space for new growth and development. It is a time of rejuvenation when the Sun, moving closer to the Earth, sends energy into the earth and into our bodies quickening our instincts, intensifying our emotions, and opening our consciousness. In other words: Spring Fever!

The spark of life initiated by the sign of Aries emerging from the birth waters of the sign Pisces, in the archetypal order of the zodiac, is seen in its glyph, the traditional ram’s horns symbol. Aries is the life force energy it takes for a seed to push through the earth to become a sprout. But since it is a tender sprout, newly emerged and just formed, there is insecurity about whether or not it will thrive and grow. This uncertainty is represented in the Spring Equinox mythology by the Greek God Pan, the God of the woods, fields, and shepherds. The Ancient Greeks believed that the God Pan was able to cause great fear at times. The word panic comes from the Greek adjective panikon, which means “of Pan”.2

Sadly, fear and panic are in abundance after the tragic events in Brussels yesterday. Every time the global community is impacted by an act of terror our collective despair increases because the randomness of the event shows us that we are all potentially collateral damage regardless of race, religion, or economic status. To combat the feelings of helplessness created by our collective fear as well as to help deal with other emotions like rage, anger and grief… and in the spirit of the Spring Equinox and the lunar eclipse: the promise of new life sprouting out of darkness, and the call to let go of a long-standing pattern, respectively, I share with you the mudra for sending Love.

A mudra is a symbolic hand gesture or finger pose that has the power to transform and harmonize spiritual, mental and physical aspects in an individual. Since we are all connected, the act of doing this gesture with the intention of sending Love into the world ripples out to the collective like a pebble being dropped into a pool of water.

Fold your index finger down to the base of your thumb; touch the tips of your middle finger and ring finger to the tip of your thumb; keep your pinky extended straight out (sending the energy out).

While this may seem like a rather simplistic reaction to terrorist forces in the world, consciously choosing to send Love in the face of hate is no small thing. Quantum physicists are proving that “thoughts are things” meaning that what our minds focus on becomes reality. Choosing the higher vibration of Love over hate in the microcosm of your life contributes to the expansion of Love in the macrocosm of the world. Carl Jung defined the concept of enantiodromia as the tendency of a force to turn into its opposite when at the extreme. So perhaps the mudra for love needs to follow the more common universal finger gesture used when upset and angered… That said, the mudra for sending love is powerful. After the attacks in France last fall I began to hold this mudra during my daily subway rides in NYC and whenever I travel to allay my own fear that I am not safe on mass transit. In doing so, I have found that not only does it soothe my worries; it positively changes the energy around me.

Despite our seeming lack of control over world events, I believe our individual actions effect the collective. Every day, by word and deed, we have the choice to live in the good reality or the bad reality. Given the archetypal forces at play with this lunar eclipse and the Spring Equinox we are being reminded that we have this agency. We have the power to create light from the darkness and to bring a higher vibration into our individual lives, into our relationships, and to the planet. I invite you to align with these energies by initiating the practice of sending love to yourself and into the world with this mudra. In the words of the Beatles:

All you need is love

All you need is love

All you need is love, love

Love is all you need

And, the great John Lennon:

IMAGINE!
