Proof of Heaven
Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, M.D. Review by Cheryl Shainmark
Proof of Heaven is vivid, moving and exciting — and one of the best accounts of a Near Death Experience (NDE) you’ll ever read. Eben Alexander’s memoir of his illness and miraculous journey of consciousness while in a comatose condition will touch the heart and make a believer out of the most skeptical.
A neurosurgeon by training, Eben Alexander counted himself amongst the disbelievers when it came to NDEs, and other spiritual phenomenon that patients occasionally reported. He was convinced that consciousness, or the soul, was a remnant of biological function and that the brain was the only source of thought, ideas, humor and everything that makes us human. As he put it, “If you don’t have a working brain, you can’t be conscious.” Any tales of mystical encounters with departed loved ones or “going into the light” must be sheer fantasy he thought.
Then in 2008, Dr. Alexander became gravely ill with a rare brain disease and slipped into a coma. As the book makes clear, the author had no brain function for the seven days that he was unconscious. During that time, Dr. Alexander reports travelling to different dimensions or worlds where he has remarkable experiences and a breathtaking encounter with the Divine. Although he has no concept of time, for several days he receives messages and insights, learns about the nature of the universe, and comes to realize that unconditional love is the basis of everything. The story moves along briskly as the author alternates recounting the details of the beautiful worlds and beings he encounters with the charged story of how his family coped and doctors worked by his bedside while he was unconscious.
Upon awakening, Dr. Alexander realized that everything that he had said could never happen, had happened to him. All of the portions of the brain that control thought had been “turned off” and yet he still had a consciousness that survived. Not only was he convinced that consciousness exists outside the body, but he believed that was our true nature. His insights and realization that his experience was scientific, and not just interesting, encouraged him to write about his experiences. Proof of Heaven is one man’s amazing encounter with the Divine, but it will appeal to anyone interested in their spiritual journey.
