The Wisdom of Ayurveda
“Ayurveda” is Sanskrit for “Life-Knowledge,” and it is one of the oldest forms of ancient healing still in use today. While most Americans have heard of Ayurvedic medicine by now, few realize how many of our current herbal remedies come from the ancient Vedic texts. For example, the many benefits of eating yogurt, using turmeric and other spices were documented in India over 2000 years ago.
Health sources from WebMD to Deepak Chopra to Doctor Oz have written about the benefits of proper digestion with the Ayurvedic diet, and physicians now routinely recommend massage, yoga, and accupressure treatments as part of their patient’s healing routines. Researchers are documenting the properties of herbs to treat insulin response, thyroid conditions, rheumatoid arthritis , and more. Increasingly, people are turning, or returning to alternative medicine for the most natural remedies possible and that includes ayurvedic remedies.
Over the years I have been very interested in this ancient form of healing, and have been fortunate to have a couple of sessions with Charlotte Jernigan, a certified practitioner with NAMA, the National Ayurveda Medical Association. In addition to classic Ayurvedic healing, Charlotte is trained in Vedic Astrology. During our recent time together, she first evaluated my health by checking my tongue, pulses and breathing, and I was astounded at her accuracy. After that Charlotte gave me an astrological reading that was quite in-depth and again, correct in every particular. Reflecting upon it now, I am reminded anew of the wisdom of the old ways or “life knowledge.”
