Feeding the Hungry Ghost

Feeding the Hungry Ghost by Ellen Kanner Review by Cheryl Shainmark

Feeding the Hungry Ghost is a marvelous addition to the food-writing bookshelves. Ellen Kanner writes with real heart and a knack for touching on the things that sustain us, whether it’s food, faith, or family. Part personal memoir, part recipe book and, oh, by the way, part vegan, Ms. Kanner depicts a wonderful seasonality to both the earth and the human condition.

While there are occasional humerous “nudges” to help the reader find his way to a kinder, gentler manner of living, it comes across as more about the right way to live and less as a paean to veganism. (All right, maybe there’s a little of that, but this really is the most non-judgemental vegan book ever.) Readers of all culinary affiliations will enjoy the stories and recipes –Feeding the Hungry Ghost is a warmly written tribute to the best of what the earth can offer and the universal joy of sharing meals and memories.

Ms Kanner is a syndicated columnist writing for the Huffington Post’s Meatless Monday, the Miami Herald’s Edgy Veggie, and is a frequent contributor to publications such as Bon Appetit and Every Day With Rachael Ray.

“Ellen Kanner goes far beyond the physiological function of food in this charming book. Fun, well written and full of information, it is an ode to veganism and a new way of connecting with the seasons” Jaques Pepin, author of Essential Pepin
